Description
Art and Mary Anne Schulz impacted every aspect of Principia over their three decades of service. Joining the staff as Middle School houseparents in 1954, their devotion to the young men and women of Principia was evident in the way they enthusiastically undertook every opportunity to lift the students and bolster the institution. Mary Anne taught daily living skills to the young students far from home. A champion at every game, house party, and school assembly, she led with compassion and grace. She was a partner to Art as he served as Dean of Boys, School Headmaster, and President of Principia, as well as the President of the Missouri Independent Schools Association; all while coaching football, basketball, and baseball along the way. In 1960, Art coached the legendary undefeated and unscored-upon “B” football team.
Donations are applied to...
True to Art and Mary Anne’s broad and inclusive nature, the upper lobby of Simon FIeld House will be an inviting space for students, parents, community members, and visitors to meet, mingle, and cheer on their teams. The open space and glass walls afford a view into the flexible wrestling room, the concessions area, and a passage to the state-of-the-art performance court. All who enter are greeted with video screens and the “two great commandments,” which so perfectly summarize the ethos of the Schulzes, Bill Simon himself, as well as the other cherished character educators named throughout the complex: “Love the Lord thy God … and thy neighbor as thyself.” (Luke 10:27)
Why give?
"Those of us who coach are aware that our teams in every contest face two opponents, two challenges. Besides the opposing team in the game, there is error to be beaten, with its host of lying suggestions about fear, fatigue, limited ability, possible injury, — imperfect God and imperfect man. Championship teams come from championship thinking, and every victory is a unified collection of individual healings." —Art Schulz
Why are donations necessary?
Carey Field House no longer meets the needs of today’s extensive athletics programs. Along with providing up-to-date athletics facilities for male and female student-athletes, Simon Field House will be a resource for all students needing a large, indoor space for activities. We are accepting gifts of any size to help join the team that will move Principia athletics forward!
